St. Catwg’s Church, Gelligaer.
This church, one of many dedicated to St. Catwg, lies at the heart of his family’s homeland. St. Catwg was a leading figure among the monks of South Wales in the sixth century, a contemporary of David and founder of the monastery at Llancarfan in the Vale of Glamorgan. He was renowned as a teacher of the faith. Catwg’s father was the Welsh ruler Gwynlliw whose lands were centred on Gelligaer and his mother was Gwladys who gives her name to Capel Gwladys located nearby where was discovered the tenth century “Gwladys Stone”, which is to be found along with other treasures within this Church

St. Margaret’s Church, Gilfach.
This church is dedicated to St. Margaret of Antioch, a Christian martyr of the fourth century. Margaret is said to have been killed after refusing to renounce her Christian faith as demanded by the Roman Governor Olybrius when he asked her to marry him. Devotion to St. Margaret grew after the Crusades and this Church, built in the 1930’s from the donations of local people, stands as a testament to that Christian faith for which St. Margaret died and which continues to inspire us today.
